I came across a large hand-sewn embroidery piece that needed some help. Ended up taking it apart to save the squares. I am no expert but the fabric feels like the cotton kitchen dish towels - the squares are each approximately 14 x 14 inches. When she finished a square, she sewed them together. I carefully took the squares apart at the seams. They are a little fragile, if you wanted to spruce up the stitching I’m not sure how they would hold up.
